Armenia urged the international community on Friday to help defuse tensions in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict following the latest upsurge in Armenian-Azerbaijani truce violations.

First Deputy Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan met with the Yerevan-based military attachés of several foreign states to discuss recent days’ fighting around Karabakh and on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, which has left more than a dozen Armenian and Azerbaijani soldiers dead.

A statement by Armenia’s Defense Ministry said Tonoyan briefed them on “the stepping up of Azerbaijan’s subversive and sniping activities and retaliatory steps taken by the Armenian side.” He also discussed a “possible Armenian riposte” to a further escalation of tensions on the Armenian-Azerbaijani frontlines, it said without elaborating.

According to the statement, Tonoyan also urged the countries represented by the attachés to “take necessary steps to reduce the current tension” and keep Azerbaijan from taking “new provocative actions.”

Armenia and Karabakh’s Armenian-backed leadership blame Azerbaijan for the latest ceasefire violations, saying that Azerbaijani forces launched yet another armed incursion in Karabakh on Thursday. The Azerbaijani military denies this, saying that Armenian forces themselves attacked its frontline posts.
