“It looks as though Armenia and Turkey are negotiating through a mediator,” “Haykakan Zhamanak” says in relation to the latest statements on the 1915 genocide anniversary made by Turkish and Armenian leaders. “More precisely, they are negotiating not with each other but with the mediator, who exchanges messages between the two sides.” The paper says Sarkisian let it be known to Western powers and Russia earlier this month that he could soon unilaterally annul the Turkish-Armenian protocols signed in 2009. The mediating powers, it claims, persuaded Sarkisian not to do that before Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan makes a statement on the Armenian genocide.

“Taking such a step after Erdogan’s statement would be seen as not constructive. And no matter how much criticism the Armenian side voices in connection with that statement it is evident that the April 24 messages by both the Turkish prime minister and Serzh Sarkisian have points of convergence,” concludes “Haykakan Zhamanak.”

“Zhamanak” says that while the annual commemoration of the genocide is important to Armenians around the world “what we do on April 25 is more important.” “Unfortunately, we can say that none of that unity [displayed by the Armenians on April 24] has been left today, on April 25,” writes the paper.

“Zhoghovurd” assesses the first ministerial appointments to Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamian’s cabinet certified by presidential decrees. The paper says that although the cabinet has not been formed yet it is already obvious that it will have “many cadres of Robert Kocharian.” “Although they have obediently served Serzh Sarkisian in the past several years, they are mostly associated, both within the [ruling] HHK and the public, with the former president’s rule,” it says. “Apart from a political component, this fact also serves a propaganda purpose, especially considering the recent debate between Kocharian and Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisian on economic policy. By sacking Tigran Sarkisian and appointing Kocharian cadres led by Hovik Abrahamian, the minister for local government under the ex-president, Serzh Sarkisian in effect publicly admitted that Robert Kocharian’s recent evaluations [of his the current government’s policies] were totally correct.”
