Press Review

“Hraparak” laments serious damage to agriculture caused by a snowstorm that swept through Armenia over the weekend. The paper says that in the 21st century Armenian farmers remain at the mercy of weather conditions and can count on little or no government assistance.

“What happened in the last two days was not just bad weather but a devastating calamity,” writes “Hayots Ashkhar.” The paper points out that the heavy snowfall was not expected even by Armenia’s national meteorological service. “Even if they had forecast it, what difference would that have made?” it says.

“Chorrord Inknishkhanutyun” criticizes the Yerevan municipality’s response to the snowstorm. The paper says that municipal authorities were too slow in cleaning roads and sidewalks from the snow.

“Aravot” is outraged by false news reports about the killings of ethnic Armenian residents of Kessab, a small town in Syria which was seized by Islamist rebels a week ago. “Not realizing that it’s a fraud, many [Armenians] have spread that disinformation [through online social networks,] with probably good intentions, in order to show just how brutal the militants that seized Kessab were towards Armenians,” editorializes the paper. “What is the source of those lies? There are different theories.” According to one of them, Turkey and/or Azerbaijan are doing that in order to intimidate Armenians around the world.

“It must be said that there is often fertile ground for disinformation about yet another massacre,” adds “Aravot.” “In many parts of the world and Armenia in the first instance, there are many Armenians who somehow enjoy suffering, complaining and protesting. And such false reports give them reason to draw philosophical conclusions about ‘Armenian misfortune.’”
