Press Review

“Chorrord Inknishkhanutyun” laments what it calls “distorted” public attitudes in Armenia towards presidential elections. “The problem is that for some reason a considerable part of our society perceives the post of president as a prize, a bonus and discusses the issue of who deserves that prize more, rather than who would best run the country,” says the paper. “Namely, privileges stemming from that post. This is a strange approach because as a rule, Armenians are quite pragmatic in social life.”

“Zhamanak” analyzes opposition leader Raffi Hovannisian’s October 1 remark that he is ready to meet Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) leader Gagik Tsarukian. The paper speculates that Hovannisian thus seems to be “outlining the path to a new bloc” in place of his existing alliance with the Free Democrats party. It claims that he could now go as far as to “cater” for the BHK and former President Robert Kocharian. “Incidentally, there will be some serious competition here between Hovannisian and Levon Ter-Petrosian over who will give greater assistance to the [presidential] candidate of the BHK and Kocharian,” it says.

“168 Zham” reacts negatively to Russian-Armenian businessman Ara Abrahamian’s announcement that his World Armenian Congress (WAC) will support President Serzh Sarkisian in the upcoming presidential election. The paper accuses Abrahamian of meddling in “a foreign state’s affairs.” “In this case, at issue is not the ethnic origin of that organization’s members,” it says. “The problem is that they are carriers of the Russian policy and interests and will definitely remain so in case the Russian interests are realized at the expense of Armenia’s interests.”

“168 Zham” points to Abrahamian’s recent calls for Armenia to recognize Nagorno-Karabakh’s independence. The paper says the Armenian authorities have repeatedly said that such a move would undermine the Karabakh peace process and therefore run counter to Armenia’s interests. “Ara Abrahamian was saying that because that was desired by Russia’s authorities,” it says.
