Armenia’s Rescue Service said they fell to their death from a 26-meter altitude after the collapse of a platform that supported them. It gave no further details.
Police said on Wednesday that they have launched a criminal investigation into the accident under an article of the Armenian Criminal Code dealing with violation of workplace safety standards.
All four men aged from 26 to 40 were employees of the Chinese company HPCC-3 that was contracted by Russia’s Gazprom giant last October to complete the protracted construction of the Fifth Unit of Armenia’s largest thermal-power station located in the central town of Hrazdan.
Gazprom gold hold of the facility in 2006 as part of a swap agreement with the Armenian government. The Russian gas monopoly has pledged to spend at least $170 million on completing the building and equipment installation work by 2011.
