RFE/RL Armenia Report Turns 10

Ten years ago, on October 20, 1997, the Armenian Service of RFE/RL published the first issue of its English-language news website that was to become one of the most popular Internet products of RFE/RL’s 20 language services. The Armenian Service expanded its web operations in 2001, when it began posting news on its website in Armenian as well.

The Armenialiberty.org and Azatutyun.am websites now attract over 22,000 monthly unique visitors worldwide, with more than 400,000 pages read every month. It has become one of the most popular news sites for the Armenians both in Armenia and the Diaspora, as well as for the Armenian media professionals who are extensively using the site as a reliable news source.

The Armenian Service website has also its presence in Google News sites. Almost every English-language story published on Armenialiberty.org appears on Google news site on Armenia.

RFERL web operations in Armenia will have a new look and a new publisher in early 2008. More interactive pages will be available for our listeners and our users, which will enable them to share their views with us.

I congratulate my Armenian colleagues for achieving this important milestone. I thank you for your hard work and dedication in building such a strong RFE/RL web presence in Armenia.

Jeffrey Gedmin,
President of RFE/RL Inc.
