Vartan Oskanian: Armenia Moves Toward Democracy, but with ‘Ups and Downs’

In an exclusive interview with RFE/RL’s Armenian Service, Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian said Armenia must deepen the democratization process, but that this requires cooperation between the authorities and the opposition.

“We are moving toward democracy, but with ups and downs,” he said.

Oskanian is sure that the Armenian opposition must be interested in speeding up democratization, because in that case the opposition will have better chances of achieving its goals.

“Democratization is Armenia’s most important resource that we can lean on to improve society and develop the economy. Everyone has to realize this,” he said.

The Foreign Minister admitted that the confrontation between the authorities and the opposition earlier this year had a negative impact on Armenia’s international image.

“But we mustn’t exaggerate the consequences,” Oskanian added.
