Armenian President in Romania, wants closer economic ties

By Harry Tamrazian

Armenian President Robert Kocharian met on Monday with his Romanian counterpart Ion Iliescu in Romania's capital city of Bucharest. Kocharian, who arrived to Bucharest on Sunday, started his official visit today.

Two presidents issued a joint declaration after the talks, outlining their intention to strengthen economic ties between two countries. Kocharian and Iliescu also signed an agreement on visas for diplomatic passport holders and industrial property protection.

President Kocharian will meet on Tuesday members of Romania's Armenian community during his visit, which ends Tuesday. Romania is a home for over 3000 ethnic Armenians.

Robert Kocharian also seeks Romania’s support in helping Armenia to integrate with Europe. Romania is an EU candidate and could become a full member as early as in 2007.
