MOSCOW (AP) - Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov has dismissed the commander of a Russian military base in Armenia for misconduct and poor performance, a news agency reported Saturday.
Maj. Gen. Alexander Titov, commander of the 102nd military base in Gyumri, Armenia, was dismissed for being aloof from the affairs of his base, negative performance which allowed for theft of military property and repeated misconduct, the ITAR-Tass news agency said.
A source in the Russian Embassy in Yerevan said Saturday that Titov's dismissal was connected to the shooting of two Armenians by a Russian sentry at the base. The two were in a group of drunks that tried to enter the base and refused the sentry's order to leave.
