Kocharian To Discuss EU Approach In Austria

VIENNA (dpa) - Armenian President Robert Kocharian will discuss his country's possible approach to the European Union during a visit to Austria on Wednesday.

Reports on Monday said he will have talks with his host, President Thomas Klestil, and with Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel, as well as taking part in an Armenian-Austrian economic forum.

Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian will meanwhile sign an agreement on dual taxation with Finance Minister Karl-Heinz Grasser, and a civil aviation agreement with Infrastructure Minister Mathias Reichhold.

Austrian-Armenian relations have a tradition of more than two
centuries.

Recently Armenian organizations petitioned the Austrian parliament to formally recognize the genocide of the Armenians. The French National Assembly did so in 1998.

The Austrian Greens tabled a motion in the parliament saying it should recognize the violent deaths of about 1.5 million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire during the First World War as genocide.

Turkey continues to reject the thesis of genocide, and has legal penalties for anyone propagating it.
