Armenian Man Held For 'Spying For Turkey’

By Emil Danielyan

A citizen of Armenia has been arrested on suspicion of spying for the country's arch-rival Turkey, security officials in Yerevan said Thursday.

The spokesman for the Armenian national security ministry told RFE/RL that the unidentified man was arrested on January 26 and faces charges of high treason. The official, Armenak Manukian, said the alleged spy gathered “military, economic and political information” for Turkish intelligence.

Manukian refused to disclose any details of the case, including the identity and occupation of the suspect.

It is the first time that an Armenian national is held on charges of spying for Turkey.

The two neighboring states share a long history of tense relations and currently have no diplomatic ties.
