France Names New Envoy In Armenia

By Emil Danielyan

President Jacques Chirac has appointed Henri Cuny, a 55-year-old career diplomat, to be France’s new ambassador to Armenia, the French embassy in Yerevan announced on Tuesday.

Cuny has served as a diplomatic adviser to the chief of staff of the French armed forces since 1995. He will replace Ambassador Michel Legras who has headed France’s diplomatic mission in Armenia for more than five years.

“The appointment of such an experienced high-ranking official, knowledgeable about CIS affairs, once again testifies to France’s interest in Armenia,” the embassy said in a statement.

An embassy spokeswoman told RFE/RL that the new envoy is expected to arrive in Yerevan next month.
