Karabakh High On Agenda As Kocharian Meets NATO’s Robertson

By Ahto Lobjakas in Brussels

NATO's Secretary General George Robertson and the visiting Armenian President Robert Kocharian discussed the recently stalled Nagorno Karabakh peace process as well as other topical issues in Brussels on Wednesday. Speaking at a news conference after the meeting, Robertson said that although NATO did not have a "lead" role in the peace talks, it took a keen interest in the stability of the Southern Caucasus.

"Clearly, regional stability in the Southern Caucasus depends very much on the ultimate resolution of Nagorno Karabakh and I expressed my wish to the President [Kocharian] that he and president [Heydar] Aliev [of Azerbaijan] -- who I also met on my visit to the Caucasus -- will be able to find a settlement that is satisfactory to the
interests of both countries and indeed to the wider world," he said.

Kocharian told journalists he had also briefed Robertson on a recent CIS security meeting in Yerevan that brought together the leaders of Armenia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Belarus.

The Armenian leader was the Belgian on the second day of a visit which he hopes will bolster his country’s links with the European Union.
