“Golos Armenii” says opposition parties contemplating an alliance with Levon Ter-Petrosian risk ruining their political future. The paper cites the example of several such parties that held negotiations with Ter-Petrosian but failed to form an alliance with Ter-Petrosian in advance of the February 2008 presidential election. “None of them can now boast serious prospects for the future,” writes the paper.

Opposition leader Aram Karapetian stresses the need for snap parliamentary elections in Armenia in an interview with “168 Zham.” “That has become imperative,” he says. “Especially now that the [ruling] does not exist as such. Dashnaktsutyun has quit it, Orinats Yerkir’s votes have diminished a lot, while Prosperous Armenia … is making a stand by refusing to take up any position as a result of the Yerevan council elections.”

“Chorrord Ishkhanutyun” claims that because of the worsening economic situation in the country the Armenian government is unable to pay public sector employees and is seeking external loans to prevent wage arrears. The opposition paper also alleges that hundreds of Armenian companies are closing and thousands of people are becoming jobless because of a “tax terror” unleashed by the authorities. “As a result, the budget is being emptied, while the authorities calmly borrow from abroad to pay their salaries,” it says.

“Hayots Ashkhar” says there is a widely held belief that Armenia needs a “dictatorship of law” to increase the efficiency of its government. “By and large, the dictatorship of law is not a bad thing,” says the paper. “But how realistic is its establishment?”
