Presss Review

“If the election campaign continues at the same pace, nobody in the Republican and Prosperous Armenia parties will be left unhurt,” “Chorrord Ishkhanutyun” writes, commenting on a fresh clash between members of the two governing parties. “Clashes between these two political forces are becoming more and more fierce and spectacular. Such settling of scores usually occurs when at issue is a particular piece of property or cash. This means the ruling coalition views Yerevan as a piece of property.” The paper says such instances of violence testify to “the regime’s weakness” and demonstrate that “the authorities do not intend to do hold proper elections.”

“Azg” carries an interview with Yerevan Mayor Gagik Beglarian, who heads the electoral list of the Republican Party (HHK). Beglarian promises a “decisive intervention” in illegal construction that has “distorted the city’s architectural look.” He finds “unacceptable” even those buildings that were constructed legally but are not liked by Yerevan residents. “A 16-story structure that doesn’t stand in its right place is not justified,” says Beglarian.

“Zhamanak” says that the continuing trials of opposition members are dealing a serious blow to the credibility and prestige of Armenia’s judicial system. “The courts improvable are now faced with a sad task of proving the improvable,” says the paper. “Will that system always be like this?” it asks. “Don’t the authorities realize that it is wrong to solve political issues by dealing relentless blows to the state foundations, by thoroughly tarnishing and discrediting one of the most important pillars of the state -- the judicial system -- in the eyes of the citizens?”

“Kapital” quotes Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as indicating in an interview with a Russian news magazine that Moscow has already disbursed a $500 million loan to Armenia. “If Lavrov’s statement really corresponds to reality, then it is not clear why Armenian officials are silent about that,” comments the business daily. It notes that those officials have said Armenia will likely receive the Russian loan in late May or early June. “We have no reason to speculate that Armenia has received the Russian loan or a part of it. Otherwise, Armenian officials would have announced that.”
