Minister’s Son Held In Café Gunfight Probe

By Karine Kalantarian
The son of Urban Development Minister Ara Aramian has been arrested for his role in the March 12 high-profile gunfight in a café in downtown Yerevan, officials said on Monday.

The spokesman for the Prosecutor-General’s Office, Gurgen Ambarian, told RFE/RL that Hayk Aramian has been charged with an attempted murder and illegal arms possession. Ambarian refused to provide further details, adding only that two café employees are currently on the run.

Minister Aram has admitted that his 24-year-old son was among a group of young men who apparently settled scores at the place called Triumph, using firearms and knives. But he denied any wrongdoing on the part of the the young man, describing him as a “modest” person. Aramian could not be reached for comment throughout Friday.

According to some media reports, relatives of other senior officials were also involved in the mafia-style shooting that erupted while the presidents of Armenia and Georgia dined in an adjacent entertainment site. Little remains known about its circumstances.
