Armenian Ambassador to the United States Arman Kiragosian describes
Armenian-American relations as very positive. "I don't think that there is a disappointment in Washington towards Armenia" Kiragosian says in his interview to "Hayots Askharh". Last year the US administration had great expectations in terms of solving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and they had also expectations from the Armenian government, Kiragosian says. According to the Armenian diplomat, the current situation in the peace process is not the result of the policy of the Armenian government. Everybody knows that the violator of the Key West principles was not Armenia but Azerbaijan and the US accepts all the arguments presented by the Armenian side. US has never put the blame on Armenia on these issues, the Armenian ambassador to US tells
"Hayots Ashkharh". Some politicians in Armenia are using the pre-election campaign to speculate that Russia has downgraded its relations with Armenia, or the United States has changed its policy towards Armenia, Kiragossian says, adding that Armenia's policy towards Turkey is much more clear and invulnerable to criticism than Turkey's position and its policies. Americans also understand that sometime it is very difficult to work with Turks. If you
carefully follow the latest statements made by President Bush you could notice that the messages of the US President has been basically directed towards Turkey. He called on Turkey to improve its relations with Armenia, which is an indication that US has a clear position on this issue, Arman Kiragossian concludes.
Armenian members of the Turkish-Armenian reconciliation commission (TARC) believe that the work of the commission could resume only from the point where it has been interrupted. The Armenian members of TARC, Alexander Arzumanian and David Hovhanesian told "Haikakan Zhamanak" that not only Armenia but also Turkey should drop their preconditions. Turkey should overcome its complexies on the issue of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. Turkish-Armenian relations could not become full-fledged ties without recognizing the Armenian Genocide. Arzumanian and Hovhanessian told "Haikakan Zhamanak" that TARC should pursue the issue on public level and not on state level.
According to "Haikakan Zhamanak", the Turkish-Armenian reconciliation
commission remains the only framework, which makes it possible to have
serious discussion and progress on inter-state ties. That is why the Armenian members of TARC believe that the commission could continue its work only if there are possibilities to discuss issues related to the Genocide.
According to the leader of "Orinats Yerkir" Artur Baghdasarian,
political intolerance in the country has been elevated to unprecedented levels. The technology of politics is becoming more dirty. Having 56 single mandated seats in the new parliament would mean renewed competition between money and sub-machinguns, with all its sad consequences, he says in an interview with "Hayots Askharh". The leader of "Orinats Yerkir" also believes that the opposition will not be able to unite around a single presidential candidate. There will be several candidates in the opposition camp, Mr. Baghdasarian predicts.
"We must have people, who can tell the authorities, that they have no
longer a right to remain in power, otherwise it would have disastrous
consequences for the country", a communist member of the Parliament
Khoren Sarkissian tells "Aravot". The communist parliamentarian also says that the opposition will again occupy the podium of the parliament in September. "At last we should discuss the October 27 case, otherwise the growing suspicion is turning into a belief that the current regime was behind the parliamentary killing."
