A master of Armenian folk song, a popular singer Hovaness Badalian died in Yerevan today, at the age of 78. Badalian was honored as a National Artist of Armenia, the highest artistic award in the country. He was a professor of Music at the Yerevan Conservatorium. Hovaness Badalian performed hundreds of Armenian folk songs. He was also very popular in the Armenian communities around the world.
"We lost a great artist. He was the father of Armenian folk songs. We lost a very honest man. I am shocked," said Armenian composer Vardan Ajemian.
Today, Armenian President Robert Kocharian send his condolences to Badalian's family. A special government commission, headed by Minister of Culture Roland Sharoyan will organize Hovaness Badalian's funeral.
