Marta Ayvazian, a former senior official from the Armenian Foreign Ministry, tells “Zhamanak” that Russia will step up its “economic and political pressure” on Armenia ahead of the European Union’s November summit in Vilnius, during which Yerevan is due to initial an Association Agreement with the EU. She says that Moscow could also try to destabilize the political situation in Armenia. Nevertheless, she says, the likelihood of the agreement’s signing is still high.

She claims that President Serzh Sarkisian is seeking to sign it primarily because of the prospect of large-scale economic assistance from the EU.
“Haykakan Zhamanak” reports that Sarkisian on Tuesday dismissed a widely held belief that education standards in Armenia have been declining. The pro-opposition paper says his remarks only confirmed the existence of the serious problem. It says Sarkisian may well acknowledge it next year.
