Live blog. Fighting In Karabakh

Heavy fighting broke up in and around Nagorno-Karabakh on Saturday and has continued ever since. “Fierce” clashes were reported in the northeast of Karabakh and the southernmost section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani “line of contact,” with both sides reporting losses.

Armenian Defense Ministry Spokesman Arcrun Hovhannisyan said Karabakh defense forces have destroyed TOS-1 multiple rocket launcher systems and 1 drone.

Armenian Defense Ministry has published the names of 7 Armenian soldiers who have died in the clashes on the line of contact: Armenak Urfanyan (born 1990), machine-gunner, privte Qyaram Sloyan (born 1996), sargent Yuri Paramazyan, major Hovsep Mayilyan (born 1978), captain Hovsep Kirakosian (born 1988), contacter, driver Nodarik Margaryan (born 1963), scout, machine-gunner, contracter Sasun Mkrtchyan (born 1989).

Karen Mirzoyan, the foreign minister of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) has called for the recognition of Karabakh's independence.

"Considering the current situation the recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh's independence by the whole international community would be the right solutyion, because our experience shows that this is the only effective means to curb the ambitions of Azerbaijan," Mirzoyan told Azatutyun.am.

Responding what he called unprecedented Azerbaijani truce violations Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian said on Saturday that Armenia will bolster Nagorno-Karabakh’s security through a defense treaty.

Azerbaijani armed forces lost 3 solidiers on the front line since April 3, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said in a statement on April 4.

"During the clashes on April 3 and on the night of April 4, the Armenians suffered numerous losses in manpower and military equipment, the defense ministry said," the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said. "Three soldiers of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces were killed in the fights," the Ministry added.

Karabakh Army says shelling and artillery attacks have continued through the night and have intensified since 7:00 in the morning especially in the south-eastern and north-eastern directions, Grad multiple-launch rocket systems and 152-millimeter howitzers as well as tanks have been used.

Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Army has registered serious progress on the northern front, Karabakh Defense Ministry spokesman Senor Hasratian told RFE/RL's Armenian service in Stepanakert.

Hasratian also claimed that the Armenian forces have shot down an Azerbaijani drone and said the total number of drones destroyed has reached 4 since the escalation on April 1st.

On April 2 and 3, just after the large-scale military actions unleashed by Azerbaijan against Artsakh, Edward Nalbandian, Foreign Minister of Armenia, had a number of phone conversations with his foreign counterparts, presenting the situation on the Line of Contact between Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan.

The Foreign Minister of Armenia discussed the recent developments with Sergey Lavrov, Foreign Minister of Russia, Jean-Marc Ayrault, Foreign Minister of France, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, OSCE Chairperson-in-Office and Foreign Minister of Germany, Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary General of Council of Europe, Nikolay Bordyuzha, CSTO Secretary General, OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs Igor Popov, James Warlick, Pierre Andrieu and Andrzej Kasprzyk, Personal Representative of the OSCE, as well as Herbert Salber, the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia.

Armenia’s Ambassadors to foreign countries and Permanent Representatives to international organizations provide regular updates to the authorities of hosting country and leadership of international organizations on the developments.

Dozens of countries and international organizations condemned the resumption of military actions, called upon the immediate cessation of firing and emphasized that the exclusively peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has no alternative.
