“Zhamanak” reports that opposition members of the Armenian delegation at the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) failed to take part, ostensibly for health reasons, in Wednesday’s vote on anti-Russian PACE resolution. The paper notes that three other Armenian parliamentarians representing the ruling Republican Party and the opposition Orinats Yerkir abstained in the vote. “This move can be deemed almost heroic if we compare it to the infamous [2014 Armenian] vote against [a pro-Ukrainian resolution] at the UN,” it says. “It looks like the Armenian authorities are now more independent on this issue than their domestic rivals.”

“Zhoghovurd” blames the Armenian government for the fact that Armenian demonstrators were on Wednesday greatly outnumbered by rival Turkish protesters outside the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg. The paper believes that the Turkish crowd was organized and backed by official Ankara and faults Yerevan for not mobilizing Armenians from France and other parts of Europe for renewed ECHR hearings on an Armenian genocide case. “Only about 30 Armenians gathered in front of the court building,” it says.

“Chorrord Ishkhanutyun” describes as unprecedented Tuesday’s statement by the U.S., French and Russian co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group which blamed Azerbaijan for the latest upsurge in violence in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone. The pro-opposition paper at the same time downplays the development, saying that it followed the co-chairs’ meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov. It claims that the mediators will criticize Armenia in the same fashion after their upcoming talks with Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian. Both the mediators and Azerbaijan are trying to secure more concessions from the Armenian side, it says.
