“Hayots Ashkhar” says that the constitutional reform process initiated by President Serzh Sarkisian will meet with growing resistance from the Armenian opposition as it gains momentum this fall. The paper says at the same that the behavior of opposition forces rejecting the reform “has nothing in common with the concept of resistance.” “Why do we think so? Because their counter-steps are conditioned only by their parochial interests,” writes the pro-presidential paper. “They want to prevent a transition to the parliamentary system of governance because in that case they would hardly come to power in the foreseeable future.

“Zhoghovurd” says that the four parliamentary parties challenging Sarkisian are not yet making good on their promises to mount a serious challenge against the president. “They only meet, discuss things but cannot even set a date for their rally,” writes the paper.

“Zhoghovurd” quotes the spokesman for the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK), Eduard Sharmazanov, as saying that Sarkisian will continue to head the HHK for many years. Therefore, he said on Friday, the HHK will remain Armenia’s dominant political force in the foreseeable future. These remarks are construed by the paper as further proof that Sarkisian wants to stay in power after completing his second and final presidential term in 2018.

“Hraparak” lambastes those who assert that Armenia has no choice but to join the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union for national security considerations. “Such statements mean only one thing: we are scared of the Russians and we agree to be dependent and unfree provided that our physical security is not in danger,” writes the paper. “Aren’t we the nation that refused to live in Azerbaijani slavery, preferred war, years of hardship to being part of another state?”
