Opposition leader Levon Ter-Petrosian scoffed at various reforms implemented or promised by the Armenian authorities at the weekend, saying that they are only leading the country to ruin.

“I don’t believe in any reform initiated by this regime,” he told RFE/RL’s Armenian service (Azatutyun.am). “The more they reform, the more this country is destroyed. All of their so-called ‘reforms’ are aimed at destroying this country.”

Ter-Petrosian spoke while attending a conference of the youth wing of his Armenian National Congress (HAK). Delegates applauded and chanted “Levon!” as the 69-year-old former president of Armenia made his way into the conference hall in Yerevan.

President Serzh Sarkisian has promised to carry out sweeping political and economic reforms throughout his six-year rule. His recently appointed prime minister, Hovik Abrahamian, has given similar assurances. The HAK and other major opposition groups consider Sarkisian’s presidency a gross failure, however.

Ter-Petrosian has repeatedly described Armenia’s political system as “kleptocracy” ever since he returned to the political arena in 2007, almost ten years after quitting power. He said on Saturday that changing that system is the main aim of his political activities. “My target is the system. I have no other task,” he said.
