Press Review

(Saturday, May 3)

1in.am says that just like many public institutions, the Armenian media is widely distrusted by ordinary people. The online journal believes that while local media outlets share much of the blame for this sentiment it is also the result of consistent efforts by the country’s “political institutions” discredit the press. “We have seen in recent years various kinds of attacks on the press launched by political forces,” it claims.

Lragir.am expects most deputies from Gagik Tsarukian’s Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) to back a parliamentary vote of confidence in Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamian and his cabinet. The public says that the new government’s program to be debated by the Armenian parliament will not be radically different from that of the previous cabinet which was harshly criticized by BHK lawmakers. It says the latter will mostly vote for it not only because of family connections between Abrahamian and Tsarukian but also because of the business interests of the BHK leader and his wealthy associates.

7or.am comments on plans by President Serzh Sarkisian’s ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) to indefinitely stay in power. “The Armenian people must be congratulated on this,” the pro-BHK publication says tartly, citing a statement made by HHK spokesman Eduard Sharmazanov.

Political analyst Aghasi Yenokian tells “168 Zham” that dates for Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union are not yet known because of Russia’s lingering economic disagreements with the two other member states, Belarus and Kazakhstan. “These issues are neither ours nor Serzh Sarkisian’s or the Armenian society’s,” he says. “These issues are [Russian President] Vladimir Putin’s. If he manages to develop something that can be signed by Armenia, Armenia will sign it.” But that will take some time, adds Yenokian.
