Armenia - U.S. Ambassador John Heffern speaks at a public event in Yerevan, 25Feb2012.
John Heffern, the U.S. ambassador in Yerevan, met on Tuesday with Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) leader Gagik Tsarukian and his close political associates to discuss recent political developments in the country.

Writing on his Twitter page, Heffern called the meeting a “useful update and exchange of views on domestic and regional issues.” The U.S. Embassy in Armenia did not issue a statement on it.

The BHK’s press office said Heffern discussed with Tsarukian as well as former Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian and two other senior BHK figures “a number of issues of mutual interest.” It gave no details.

The BHK, which controls the second largest faction in the Armenian parliament, is thought to have been instrumental in the April 3 unexpected resignation of Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisian. Further political developments in Armenia depend, in large measure, on its position on the new government to be formed by Sarkisian’s successor, Hovik Abrahamian.

Tsarukian’s party has yet to decide whether it will continue deepening its cooperation with established opposition groups or will adopt a more conciliatory stance on the government. Abrahamian has a close rapport with the BHK leader.
