“Haykakan Zhamanak” says the outcome of the continuing bloody events in Ukraine will determine in large measure whether Russia is “simply a big state or a real empire.” This, the paper says, will also have serious implications for Russia’s perception of Armenia. An imperial Russia would treat its South Caucasus ally as a Russian province, it says.

“Chorrord Inknishkhanutyun” says the international community appears to have realized that if those responsible for the March 2008 violence in Yerevan had been punished the Ukrainian authorities would not have dared to use deadly force against anti-government protesters in Kiev. “The outside world has probably also realized that a path what begins with gunshots fired at one’s own people leads to the [Russian-led] Customs Union,” it says. This, continues the pro-opposition daily, bodes well for the success of more opposition attempts to unseat President Serzh Sarkisian.

“168 Zham” reports that the four opposition parties represented in Armenia’s parliament have again failed to agree on a possible joint vote of no confidence in the government. They will instead come up with a proposal to launch a fresh parliamentary inquiry into the March 2008 violence in Yerevan. “This bill is imperative in the sense that the March 1 anniversary is coming up and the Armenian National Congress (HAK) needs to demonstrate that it is consistent in seeking justice for the perpetrators of those events,” writes the paper.

It says the HAK and the opposition parties realize that they are not in a position to force the government-controlled National Assembly to fire the government. “Wealthy deputies from the Prosperous Armenia (BHK) and Dashnaktsutyun parties are not prepared to endanger their businesses and spoil relations with the government,” concludes “168 Zham.”

“Zhamanak” notes that the BHK is “stubbornly” refusing to identify itself as an opposition party and continuing to prefer the term “alternative.” The paper is also unhappy with the fact that the BHK, the HAK and Dashnaktsutyun have voiced support “in one way or another” for Armenia’s membership of the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.
