“Haykakan Zhamanak” believes that President Serzh Sarkisian’s speech at the latest congress of the Yerkrapah Union of Nagorno-Karabakh war veterans brought more clarity to and somewhat changed the political situation in Armenia. The paper says Sarkisian made clear that he bears full responsibility for policies implemented by the Armenian government. “Sarkisian addressed all controversial aspects of the government’s activities of recent months: the pension reforms, the gas agreement [with Russia’s Gazprom,] and slow economic growth” it says. “He did not even attempt to distance himself from them.”

In an interview with “Hayots Ashkhar,” Galust Sahakian, a deputy chairman and the parliamentary leader of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK), comments on Gagik Tsarukian’s speech at the weekend congress of his Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK). “The opposition forces must be with the people, rather than stay in their warm offices,” says Sahakian. “I find such political stance important for all political parties. Especially now that the civil society is quite active in Armenia and our citizens also want to speak up about governance processes. In this sense, the current opposition’s behavior is not comprehensible for me. When they see that people have gathered somewhere they go there and join them, claiming to demonstrate their own potential.”

“But in order to play a serious role in the society they must stand alongside the people, listen to their voice, and visit regions more often” continues Sahakian.  “That must be their daily work. All pro-government and opposition parties must be like that. In this regard, I agree with Gagik Tsarukian and believe that he has adopted a very correct approach. I see no revolutionary overtones in his discourse.”
