President Serzh Sarkisian on Tuesday claimed to have received a popular mandate to govern Armenia for another five years in what he called a democratic election and pledged to effect “serious changes” during his second term.

“I want to thank my voters and our society,” he said in early-morning televised remarks at the headquarters of his Republican Party of Armenia. “These elections once again proved that at critical moments our people manage to close the ranks and make the right decisions.”

“Armenians have chosen a path towards a secure Armenia,” Sarkisian declared, referring to his election campaign motto. “And I am happy and proud that I will stand alongside every Armenian on that path.”

The incumbent also thanked election bodies and his team for holding “good elections.” He went on to pay tribute to his three main election challengers: Raffi Hovannisian, Hrant Bagratian and Paruyr Hayrikian. “Frankly, competing with them was an honor for me,” he said.

“I hope that those who did not vote for me will understand the majority’s decision and we will start jointly developing Armenia in a stable environment,” added Sarkisian.

The president further said the election conduct criticized by the opposition demonstrated that “serious changes” are possible in Armenia. “And that gives us great hope that those changes will produce results in the foreseeable future,” he said.
