“Hayots Ashkhar” says that Armenia’s four main opposition parties represented in parliament are threatening to launch a new offensive against the government this autumn. “Their arsenal is not rich but it has been tested over the years,” writes the pro-establishment paper. “Every spring we hear this kind of threats.” Opposition forces have almost always failed to act on those threats, it says.
“Chorrord Ishkhanutyun” echoes the opposition warnings in an editorial. “There are isolated skirmishes between the authorities and the people for the time being, with neither side managing to prevail,” writes the pro-opposition paper. “The truce is largely holding. But if things continue like this there could be serious developments in the autumn. One is left to hope that the problem will be settled through peaceful negotiations.”
“Zhoghovurd” says that it is becoming increasingly evident that the process of Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan has stalled because of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. “Although the authorities claimed after [the EEU’s May 29 summit in Kazakhstan’s capital] Astana that the EEU is an economic structure and that the Karabakh problem will not be solved within its framework, there are no doubts today that Karabakh is the price which the EEU member states led by Russia are forcing Armenia to pay for its membership,” speculates the paper.
