“Zhamanak” says that despite refusing to back the government program the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) and its three opposition allies will not actively challenge Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamian in the months ahead. BHK representatives have said that their party needs some time to see whether the government is doing a good job. The paper dismisses this explanation, arguing that most cabinet members have held government positions for more than a decade.
“Hayots Ashkhar” describes the parliamentary debates on the program as an “exchange of recriminations, insults and barbs” between ministers and their loyalists and some opposition deputies. The pro-presidential paper notes at the same time that most opposition parties represented in the National Assembly are “loyal to Hovik Abrahamian in one way or another” for now.
“Chorrord Ishkhanutyun” mockingly calls Abrahamian’s’ policy program a “mixture of fairy tales and toasts.” “Toasts are not supposed to be put to the vote,” writes the pro-opposition paper. “People simply listen to them, either nodding in approval or scoffing at them in their minds.” The paper also believes that Abrahamian will fail to fulfill what he has promised. “Why? First of all, because this not Abrahamian’s government, this is Serzh Sarkisian’s government. Serzh Sarkisian has made sure that the government’s composition is such that it will definitely fail. Otherwise, so many controversial figures would not have been appointed to the government.”
“Zhoghovurd” carries an interview with Hakob Hakobian, the owner of a leading Armenian beer company who took part in last week’s meeting between Abrahamian and more than a hundred business leaders. Abrahamian warned them to stop evading taxes or face a tough crackdown. While denying tax evasion by his company, Hakobian says that a “moderate” size of the shadow economy is good for any country.
