Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian on Wednesday sent a letter of condolences to his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella on the devastating earthquake in Italy that claimed dozens of lives and caused considerable destruction.

“I express my deep condolences and sympathies to you and the families of the victims, wishing them endurance and tenacity. We pray for the health of the injured and wish them a speedy recovery,” Sarkisian wrote in his message disseminated by his press office.

“I am confident that through the consistent efforts of the Italian government it will be possible to eliminate the consequences of the natural disaster as quickly as possible. Our hearts and minds are with the friendly people of Italy.”

At least 120 people have been killed and dozens more are missing or feared dead in a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that hit central Italy in the early hours of August 24. Rescue operations in the areas affected by the natural disaster reportedly continued as of Wednesday evening.
