“Zhoghovurd” derides parliament speaker Galust Sahakian’s reaction to U.S. threats to sanction individuals who were involved in alleged fraud during Armenia’s December 6 constitutional referendum. “The fact that Galust Sahakian made sarcastic comments on the U.S. Embassy statement can have two explanations,” writes the paper. “Either the Armenian authorities have decided, as a result of instructions from Russia, to escalate relations with the U.S. or they simply forgot to tell Galust Sahakian not to talk much about such serious subjects. Either way, a negative U.S. reaction will not be late in coming.”

“Chorrord Ishkhanutyun” suggests that the Armenian National Congress (HAK) does not really expect the Constitutional Court to invalidate the official referendum results. The paper says the opposition party is trying to appeal to the court and collect the signatures of at least 27 parliament deputies needed for such an appeal with the aim of “exposing the real face” of other parliamentary forces that are nominally in opposition to President Serzh Sarkisian. “But the main aim is to expose Serzh Sarkisian’s face,” it says. “Serzh Sarkisian is the one who will decide whether or not the issue will reach the Constitutional Court.”

“Zhamanak” notes that another opposition party, Raffi Hovannisian’s Zharangutyun (Heritage), has declined to join the HAK’s court action against the referendum results despite welcoming it. “Just a few days ago, these political forces were trying to assure the public that they are united in fighting against the authorities,” writes the paper. “But now they are not even trying to show unity.”

“If we closely monitor opposition statements and actions, as closely as we monitor the authorities, we will find hundreds and perhaps thousands of omissions, contradictions and gaffes,” editorializes “Hraparak.” “In this group, people do not know what to do. Their messages are contradictory and unconvincing, and their steps unjustified and dubious. Not to mention their disunity, mutual dislike, and readiness to cut deals with the authorities.”
