The Nagorno-Karabakh military said on Saturday that its frontline troops have detained an Azerbaijani man at “the line of contact” separating them from Azerbaijani forces.

According to a statement released by the Karabakh Armenian Defense Army, the man, identified as Javid Mammadov, was caught on Friday evening while attempting to cross into northeastern Karabakh from Azerbaijan’s Terter district. Mammadov was then handed over to “relevant authorities” in Sepanakert, the statement said.

It added that the Stepanakert office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was promptly notified about the incident. An ICRC spokeswoman in Baku confirmed this information. She told the APA news agency that Red Cross representatives plan to visit Mammadov in custody.

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry, meanwhile, said it has been “informed” about Mammadov’s arrest but did not comment further, reported Haqqin.az.

Another Azerbaijani news agency, said that Mammadov lived in the town of Terter located several kilometers northeast of Karabakh. It also revealed that the man’s father is the deputy head of the Terter district’s traffic police department.
