“Zhamanak” carries an editorial on the 96th anniversary of the establishment of a short-lived independent Armenian republic. The paper claims that modern-day Armenia is based on its citizens’ “survival instincts,” rather than a “sense of statehood,” as evidenced by its culture of electoral fraud, “clan-based” economy and class of wealthy and privileged people acting with impunity. It says these fundamental ills represent a grave threat to the Armenian state.
“Zhoghovurd” is unimpressed with President Serzh Sarkisian’s calls for Turkey’s next president to visit Armenia during the April 2015 commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire. The paper believes that Sarkisian’s publicly made invitation will have only “emotional and short-term effects.” It says that his administration has done little to get the Turks and other nations to recognize the genocide. The paper is also unhappy with the work of an Armenian state commission planning and coordinating events that will be devoted to the centenary of the genocide.
“Hraparak” comments on the latest violent incidents in Yerevan and Goris that are widely blamed on relatives of two influential government-connected individuals. “Criminals have become impudent and shameless and the society scared and unprotected,” writes the paper. “Criminal habits are thriving as people often appeal to mobsters, rather than the police, in order to punish criminals.”
