“Haykakan Zhamanak” reports that President Serzh Sarkisian has been formally invited to take part in Thursday’s summit in Astana of his Russian, Kazakh and Belarusian counterparts, who are due to sign a treaty on transforming the Customs Union of their nations into a Eurasian Economic Union. The paper quotes an official from the executive body of the Customs Union as saying that it is not yet clear whether Sarkisian will accept the invitation and travel to Kazakhstan’s capital.

“Hraparak” comments on the weekend congress of Sarkisian’s Republican Party of Armenia (HHK). “The Republicans believe that their party conventions are remarkable events in the life of the Armenian people,” writes the paper. “But that is an utter lie which does not have to be proved. Those conventions are basically about self-praise. Their main feature is unanimous voting. Their declared aims are just nice wishes.” It hopes that Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamian and his cabinet will not take seriously “phony calls for reforms” that were voiced at the latest HHK gathering.

“Zhoghovurd” scoffs at Sarkisian’s claims, made in his speech at the HHK congress, that the ruling party a much bigger and more competent “pool of cadres” than any other political group in Armenia. The paper says the composition of Abrahamian’s cabinet proves the opposite. “Instead of appointing fresh faces, they have brought old and discredited cadres back to the government,” it says.
