Press Review

Writing ahead of Friday’s meeting of the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents, “Zhamanak” disagrees with those who think that Yerevan should cancel fresh talks with Baku because of the latest ceasefire violations in the conflict zone. The paper believes that Armenia needs a more complex and nuanced strategy in the negotiation process.

“Hayots Ashkhar” quotes a spokesman for Karabakh President Bako Sahakian as saying that Azerbaijan is still unlikely to unleash an all-out war despite its continuing “provocations” on the frontline. The official, Davit Babayan, says renewed fighting is highly undesirable for major power powers as it would destabilize the entire region. “With these actions Azerbaijan is simply blackmailing the international community in the hope of clinching something in return for peace and stability,” claims Babayan.

“Hraparak” says that Armenians sympathetic to Ukraine’s pro-European opposition are now wondering why it is enjoying much stronger Western support than the Armenian opposition has until now. The paper believes that opposition groups in Armenia have lacked such support because they have not been consistent and resolute enough in taking on the ruling regime. “They should have realized that they will disappoint not only ordinary citizens but also European figures closely watching their struggle,” it says.

“Chorrord Inknishkhanutyun” reports that the Armenian government approved on Thursday a draft law which stipulates that young draft-age men planning to study in foreign universities cannot have their military service deferred without paying a collateral worth at least 8.5 million drams ($21,000). The pro-opposition paper claims that the government thus wants to equate them to arrested criminal suspects who can be released on bail.
