An Armenian woman was among at least 47 people killed in the collapse of a roof at a supermarket in Latvia’s capital Riga late on Thursday.
Armenia’s Foreign Ministry identified her as Naira Grigorian. It was not clear if the Armenian national was a permanent resident of the Baltic state or visited it as a tourist.
The Maxima store in a Riga suburb was reportedly full of shoppers on their way home from work during Latvia’s worst disaster in decades. As rescue workers pulled bodies from the ruins of the collapsed building on Friday Latvian public television said as many as 40 people could still be trapped in the rubble.
President Serzh Sarkisian was quick to offer his Latvian counterpart Andris Berzins his condolences in connection with the tragedy.
