Press Review

“Aravot” says that there is nothing new or unusual about opposition leader Levon Ter-Petrosian’s calls for President Serzh Sarkisian’s resignation. The paper argues that Ter-Petrosian himself faced such demands citing threats to Armenia’s national security when he was president from 1991-1998. It says the country will always be confronted with grave security challenges which the opposition will blame on the government.

“It is hard to disagree with Ter-Petrosian’s evaluations,” writes “Zhoghovurd.” “Namely, [Ter-Petrosian’s claim that] Serzh Sarkisian is faced with a dilemma: to quit in a dignified manner or get the Armenian people in trouble.” The paper is at the same time puzzled by the timing and purpose of Ter-Petrosian’s latest statement, saying that Sarkisian will certainly reject the resignation calls.

“Zhamanak” reports that cross-border gunfire from Azerbaijani army positions forced on Wednesday the temporary closure of a major highway in northern Armenia. The paper attacks the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) for not reacting to that incident. “This is the case where it must demonstrate the political will to ensure Armenia’s security and show that the CSTO is a viable alliance,” the paper says, adding: “The CSTO cannot be viable when it comes to Armenia’s security. That structure is effective only when it comes to keeping Armenia within the bounds of Russia’s interests.”

“168 Zham” sees a change in European officials’ and pundits’ rhetoric on Armenia following recent days’ “political and propaganda attacks” on Yerevan by the member states of the Russian-led customs union. “In lieu of regrets and disappointment voiced after September 3, there are now more statements to the effect that the European future of Armenia is not a totally lost case, that Europe itself must fight for Armenia, and that the Association Agreement remains on the agenda of Armenia’s relationship with the European Union,” writes the paper. It claims that the European Union will be ready to finalize the agreement at its upcoming summit in Vilnius if Yerevan reverses its decision to join the customs union.
