“Aravot” says that while it is important to seek greater international recognition of the Armenian genocide Armenians need to have a clear idea of “why in some places we managed to put up resistance against Turkish troops and irregulars and why there was no such resistance in many cases.” “We avoid talking about this subject probably because we don’t want to play into the Turks’ hands,” editorializes the paper. “But may be we do them a greater favor when in connection with 1915 we portray ourselves as wretched, pitiful and long-suffering people, as if only we suffered and the history of other peoples was an uninterrupted chain of victories and pleasures.”

“Orakarg” says that the victory in the 1991-1994 war for Nagorno-Karabakh had a serious impact on Armenian ethnic identity shaped by the 1915 genocide. “But we have to admit that the Armenians and especially the Diaspora have not been very active in adopting a more victorious identity,” the paper writes in an editorial. “Some Diaspora Armenian commanders who fought in the Artsakh (Karabakh) war blame the Diaspora’s insufficient participation in the Artsakh war on the work of Diaspora structures. Years ago this theory seemed weird. But the events in Syria have eliminated all doubts. There have been no serious steps to relocate Syrian Armenians to Armenia not only because of the inept Armenian authorities but also due to lobbying by Diaspora structures.”

“Hraparak” comments on Tuesday’s fatal shooting of a man in Gyumri, which is widely linked with a long-running feud between two local clans. “It is no longer unusual to see relatives of [former Gyumri Mayor] Vartan Ghukasian shoot, beat up, intimidate and threaten people,” writes the paper. “In recent years we have received such reports so often that they have become kind of natural and we are not surprised anymore. The authorities thought that the mayor’s sacking would cool the Ghukasians’ tempers and Gyumri will cease to be a scene of armed clashes and settling of scores. But it turned out that a Vartanik [Ghukasian] stripped of power and his heirs got down to business with even greater vigor. One thing is now obvious. The authorities too have run out of patience.”

“The post of Yerevan mayor should be occupied by someone who is capable of saying ‘no’ to Serzh Sarkisian,” says “Chorrord Inknishkhanutyun.” “Is [Yerevan Mayor] Taron Markarian able to show determination on any issue and say ‘no’ to Serzh Sarkisian? Of course he is not.”
