Press Review

“Gagik Tsarukian and Levon Ter-Petrosian are waiting,” writes “Zhamanak.” “Nobody except journalists and their sympathizers probably cares about this anymore.” The paper is not clear about “what they are waiting for” before announcing their plans for the February presidential election. “In all likelihood, they themselves don’t know what they are waiting for,” it says. “But it may be that they are not waiting for anything at all and, because of having nothing to say and do, simply want to stall for time and make statements later.”

“Aravot” says that throughout his 1998-2008 rule former President Robert Kocharian and his loyalists blamed the Ter-Petrosian camp for any opposition challenge against the government. Now, the paper says, Kocharian is regarded as the driving force behind Gagik Tsarukian’s Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK). “There are some historical grounds for that,” it says in an editorial. “The party and its previous parliamentary faction were formed with the former president’s active involvement. But to perceive and interpret every BHK move in that conspiracy context is a delusion or propaganda ploy.”

“The fact of the matter is that during Serzh Sarkisian’s five-year presidency the situation in Armenia has catastrophically deteriorated in all areas,” writes “Chorrord Inknishkhanutyun.” “The economy has declined, the poverty rate has gone up substantially, the scale of emigration is terrible and so on. In this situation, the dominant sense in the society is one of hopelessness.”

“In order to ensure his reelection, Serzh Sarkisian needs to make huge efforts,” continues “Chorrord Inknishkhanutyun.” “First, he needs to try to explain why none of his pre-election promises given five years ago has been fulfilled. He will then have to order another revision of voter lists and increase the number of voters by another 100,000-200,000. Then he will have to set aside $20-25 million for vote bribes, coordinate the actions of those handing out the bribes and make sure all that is done without much noise. Then he will have to reach agreement international structures so that their evaluations are not too strict … The society has a much easier job to do, which doesn’t require any effort. All it has to do is not to elect Serzh Sarkisian.”
