Armenian Official Held For ‘Bribery’

An adviser to Armenian Minister for Emergency Situations Mher Shahgeldian was arrested for alleged fraud and bribery on Friday.

The Special Investigative Service (SIS) said the official, Sanatruk Sahakian, is suspected of received a hefty bribe from the family of a young man seeking to enroll at Armenia’s main police academy. A SIS statement said Sahakian had fooled the family into believing that he can arrange the man’s enrollment in return for the kickback.

No further details were reported. It was not clear if Sahakian was caught red-handed or whether he admitted to the alleged bribery.

The criminal case could prove embarrassing for Orinats Yerkir, one of the four parties represented in Armenia’s government. Both Sahakian and Shahgeldian are affiliated with the party. Orinats Yerkir did not immediately react to the arrest.

Sahakian was a leading member of the once influential Armenian Community Party before joining Orinats Yerkir.
