Press Review

“It is obvious that as of today, the only presidential candidate who has sufficient international authority and political will to end the blockade of Armenia is Levon Ter-Petrosian,” editorializes “Aravot.” “The authorities as well as a number of other opposition candidates consider that resolve to be an attempt to thrust Armenia into Turkey’s embrace or to implement the formula of ‘let’s give up Karabakh and live well.’ But by mounting the nationalist horse you can’t move too far in the 21st century. Of course, if you want to become a modern European state.”

“Is Russia really interested in seeing an end to Armenia’s blockades?” continues “Aravot.” “According to some indications, it’s not.”

“Hayots Ashkhar” strongly condemns opposition leader Raffi Hovannisian for backing Ter-Petrosian’s presidential bid. “Judging from everything, Ter-Petrosian offered a better price package [to Raffi,] which seems to have helped the [Zharangutyun] party leader end the prolonged vicious circle of dithering and announce his unconditional support for a former president who had declared national ideology a ‘false category.’” The pro-government paper claims that in return for endorsing Ter-Petrosian Hovannisian will demand the post of foreign minister in the event of the ex-president’s return to power. It says Hovannisian has “reconsidered his tough position on the genocide issue.”

“Haykakan Zhamanak,” meanwhile, attacks another presidential candidate, Artur Baghdasarian, for failing to follow Hovannisian’s example. The pro-Ter-Petrosian rages at Baghdasarian for hinting that the former president should also consider dropping out of the race in his favor. It says Baghdasarian is no match to Ter-Petrosian as the latter is now supported by 19 parties and more than a dozen non-governmental organizations. “And if Artur Baghdasarian thinks that the first president can withdraw his candidacy in his favor, that means he thinks about dividing, splitting this powerful force.”
