Armenian military prosecutors have made the first arrest in their investigation into Wednesday’s shooting of three soldiers at an army base in the northern city of Vanadzor.
The chief military prosecutor, Gagik Jahangirian, told RFE/RL on Thursday that the investigators suspect that they were gunned down by a fellow conscript. He said the soldier, whom he identified as Arman Hovsepian, has been taken into custody and charged with murder committed “in aggravating circumstances.”
Jahangirian refused to be drawn on possible motives for the killing or say whether he believes that anyone else was also involved in it.
The soldiers, two of them brothers, reportedly came under automatic gunfire as they slept in a barracks adjacent to an army warehouse. Jahangirian said afterwards that no items were stolen from the warehouse.
