Kocharian Praises China For 'Boosting Armenian Statehood'

By Emil Danielyan

The leaders of China and Armenia have exchanged letters on the tenth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between their nations, with President Robert Kocharian praising Beijing for "reinforcing Armenian statehood" over the past decade.

In a written message to Chinese President Jiang Zemin publicized on Monday, Kocharian said "Armenia attaches great significance to deepening the friendly relations with China." He said the ten-year bilateral relationship has been based on "high-level political dialogue and mutual understanding."

"I am convinced that Chinese-Armenian relations have a great future," Kocharian concluded.

Jiang, for his part, said he is satisfied with the fact that "our countries have similar approaches and cooperate in an effective way." He said the strengthening of bilateral ties is in "the fundamental interests" of the Armenian and Chinese peoples.

The two governments had agreed to deepen economic cooperation during Prime Minister Andranik Markarian's official visit to China last year. During that visit, Markarian reaffirmed Armenia's support for Beijing's sovereignty over Taiwan.
